I get this question a lot: “I’m building a web site, what size do I make my design for?”
The answer could depend on your target market (say a site for Mac people for example) or even a certain browser (say a plug in for Apple’s Safari) plus the fact your design might need a lot of space (say a 3 column layout) but the truth is there is a sweet spot that you can design for to please all browsers and resolution. Designers toolbox has a great chart comparing web safe areas.
Last but not least is the “state of the web” as I like to call it in which you can see the common denominator of everyday users’ resolution. Just in 2008, we saw Apple.com and NewYorkTimes.com change their design for 1024 pixel resolution. W3Counter has some globat stats that include screen resolutions that you can browse to keep up to date.
