Power to the people – publishers take notice!

mgkmchxkazywcMichael Lewis’ latest book - The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine was published recently and the book’s reviews are extremely negative. Most of these reviewers haven’t even read the book! Reviewers are irate due to the fact that publisher WW Norton has decided not to release a Kindle version (nor Nook) of the book at the same time as its hardback release. Example review:

“I’d like to add my name to the list of people who are very disappointed that this book does not have a Kindle edition. No, I haven’t read the book, but I want to — on my Kindle! If all these one star reviews lead to fewer sales, I think that would be a great result and an excellent lesson for the author/publisher.”

I support these efforts 100% because publishers delaying Kindle releases to protect hardback sales is bullshit. Similar to what movie publishers are doing with Netflix, this is only pissing off consumers like myself whose spent hundreds of dollars on a Kindle and its books because we want our media in a different, arguably better format. Publishers should be embracing technology, not hinder it in any way.

At the time of this post, there are 70 one star reviews (more than all others combined) sending a clear message to publishers – we want digital versions now. I’m glad people are doing something about this although it sucks for Michael whom I’m sure has no word on this. Please don’t take it personal Michael, your just the “Rosa Parks” of the digital book revolution.

PS. Had to throw this funny review:

I cannot believe that Mr. Lewis and his publishers have the nerve to produce a book and not simultaneously produce a Na’Vi Audio Version. After watching Avatar, I only speak Na’Vi now with my friends and we wanted to listen to this audiobook – in Na’Vi – while on our summer roadtrip to Pandora. Avatar is the most successful movie ever by some measures. It’s not like we’re asking them to produce one in Xhosa.

Nook vs Kindle – Fight!

// Wednesday, December 9th, 2009 04:42 pm GMT -5 // 3 Comments » // Personal

I was excited to receive my Nook today in the mail as I’m a big fan of eBook Readers. Being a Kindle user, I really thought the Nook was going to blow away the Kindle however I’m more confused than ever if I had to choose one and here’s why:

Amazon’s Kindle:
+ So much faster than the Nook, from browsing to turning pages
+ Skinnier and lighter (by 1.5 oz)
+ Smarter shopping: “Did you mean…” in the results if you mistyped as an example
+ Text to speech basically converts a book into an audio book which is great for long distance traveling

B&N’s Nook:
+ Browsing via the touchscreen is awesome. Really improves the usability & design of the device
+ Smaller in width and height
+ Contrast is better regarding background color vs. text color
+ Lending technology to other Nook users (which they’ll be plenty of as you’ll be able to snag one at your local B&N in the near future)

Both:
+ Accompanying iPhone apps & desktop apps
+ Similar book prices – no more than $9.99
+ Built in dictionary, bookmarking and annotation
+ You save trees

Regardless, either of these devices will make anyone happy which means if you NEED one for the holiday season, you don’t have much of an option since the Nook is sold out till 2010. Luckily the Kindle is still a great device!

Condé Nast Brings Titles to iPhone

// Monday, October 26th, 2009 02:34 am GMT -5 // No Comments » // Design

Mega publisher Condé Nast is now taking steps in embracing this digital age of ours with electronic versions of its most popular titles for the iPhone. The first magazine will be GQ this December priced at 2.99 vs the 4.99 cost of the printed edition. Important note is the fact that the iPhone version will include the same editorial ads as the dead-tree version which is important for advertisers along with rich media content at little-to-no-extra cost.

So me being a GQ reader (and other magazines), I would not pay 2.99 for a digital copy and I don’t think I’m alone on this. The iPhone screen is pretty tiny for a reading experience of long duration and not comfortable as opposed to some tablet/ebook. Even a bigger problem for myself is the price is just too much. I think the selling point for me personally would be .99 cents and this is how I feel about any magazine with ads that I’m subjected to read on the iPhone. I could just fire up Safari and see the same content for free on the publisher’s site. Regardless this is exciting news because it’s a sign of things to come. Newspapers and magazines have been suffering long enough and have been too slow adapting to the digital platform as most of us turn to the internet and other electronic services and devices to get our content. How much longer before we see every big print title in every digital format available to consumers?

Kindle + Offbeat Guides = Travel Guide Heaven

Another reason to love my Kindle is that you’ll know be able to purchase and download Offbeat Guides for $3.99. If you’ve never heard of OffBeat Guides, they are great because unlike regular guidebooks, these are updated with live information as opposed to a 2 year old book you purchase at Barnes and Noble. Offbeat Guides even has live currency conversion rates, weather forecast, live events, etc. The only downside is that the Kindle is black and white so you don’t see the purdy pics. Now on the brighter side is the fact that you can carry your Offbeat Guide (and other Kindle books) on your iPhone/iPod which is great when you are traveling… not to mention the pretty colored pictures :)
